Red Light Therapy Q&A

How does red light therapy promote healing?

Red light therapy uses low-wavelength red light to activate the mitochondria –– the “power plant” inside of your body’s cells. Your cells that are exposed to red light absorb its energy and begin working more efficiently. In other words, increasing the amount of energy inside your cells lets your body repair itself more effectively.

The Aletheia Integrative team uses red light therapy to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and encourage collagen production. When combined, these factors promote healing and offer anti-aging effects.

What types of medical issues can benefit from red light therapy?

The Aletheia Integrative team uses red light therapy to:

  • Improve wound healing
  • Reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots
  • Reduce stretch marks
  • Improve scars
  • Improve acne
  • Relieve inflammation
  • Improve skin texture

Red light therapy can also be used to promote hair growth in people with androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). When used in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, it can provide thicker, healthier hair.

What happens during red light therapy?

Red light therapy is an outpatient procedure that averages 20-40 minutes.

You will relax and lie down while the light shines onto your skin. The device emits low-wavelength red light that penetrates your skin and activates healing at the cellular level. More specifically, the wavelengths increase blood flow to the area and encourage the production of new cells and tissue.

How many red light therapy treatments will I need?

The number of red light therapy treatments you need depends on several things, including your age, the severity of your symptoms, and your goals.

Red light therapy is a cumulative treatment, so the results add up over time. The Aletheia Integrative team typically recommends a series of weekly red light therapy treatments over the course of one to four months*. Some people experience noticeable results after the first few treatments, but for others, it takes longer.

Is red light therapy safe?

Red light therapy is safe and usually well-tolerated. Because the treatment is noninvasive, you don’t have to worry about infection or scarring.
